Found a Gap? When to Repair It and When to Call Pest Control

Found a gap under a door or beside a screen? Learn what routine maintenance can address and when recurring bugs are a reason to call pest control.

You notice daylight under the back door, then find a bug nearby. Is replacing the door sweep enough, or is it time to call pest control?

Start with what you can see. A worn sweep or torn screen is a home-maintenance issue worth addressing. Whether you also need pest service depends on what you are finding and whether it keeps happening.

Here is how to separate those two decisions without turning a small repair into a weekend-long project.

Repair, inspection or both?

Start with the opening you found

Close the door and look along the bottom and sides. Check whether the sweep meets the threshold and whether the weather stripping is loose or damaged. At a window, look for a torn screen or an edge that no longer fits its frame.

These are practical places to start with routine maintenance. Replacing a worn part can reduce an opening, but the repair should still allow the door or window to work properly. Leave intentional vents and drainage openings clear.

A repair you can handle, or a job for another trade?

If the work involves wiring, plumbing, damaged wood or a place you cannot reach safely, have the appropriate professional evaluate it. Pest treatment does not fix a building defect. Likewise, finding a gap does not automatically mean that you need a pesticide treatment.

Do not plug an opening where wasps or other stinging insects are actively coming and going. Keep your distance and get the activity assessed first.

Look at the pattern, not just the gap

A bug beside a door may have entered there, but proximity alone does not confirm the route. Pay attention to what happens next:

For example, an occasional insect near an open patio door is a different situation from a recurring trail inside a kitchen cabinet. Both are worth describing accurately; they do not call for an identical response.

The EPA’s integrated pest management guidance emphasizes monitoring and identification before choosing control. The useful takeaway for a homeowner is straightforward: find out what is happening before choosing how to treat it.

After the repair, watch the same area

Once the work is finished, check that the door closes properly or the screen fits securely. Then keep an eye on the area during your normal routine.

You do not need an elaborate log. A photo and a short note about the room and date can help you explain recurring activity. Mention the repair when you contact a technician so they know what has already changed.

If sightings stop, keep the repaired area in your regular maintenance checks. If they continue, avoid assuming that another bead of caulk will solve the problem. The insects may be using another route, or the source may be somewhere else.

When to ask for a pest inspection

An inspection is a useful next step when activity keeps returning, spreads to several areas or involves a pest you cannot identify. You can also ask for help before making a repair if insects are actively using the opening.

Suspected termites, persistent cockroach activity and rodent evidence deserve a specific conversation about service scope. Tell us what you have seen before selecting a plan. All Mango plans include interior and exterior rodent baiting. Trapping, removal, exclusion and repair work are not included.

For common household pests, our general pest-control service starts with the reported activity and accessible areas of the home. We can explain the treatment options while keeping any needed building repairs separate.
