Noticing bugs collecting on your siding or around your windows? During fall in Jefferson City, boxelder bugs and Asian lady beetles can gather on sunny parts of a home as they look for a protected place to spend the winter.
You may notice them most on south- and west-facing walls during warm afternoons. Small gaps around windows, doors and siding can then give them a way indoors.
Seeing insects outside does not automatically mean your home has an infestation. But it is a good opportunity to check a few common entry points before those visitors start appearing inside.
Why insects gather on your house in fall
As temperatures cool, some insects begin looking for sheltered places to spend the winter. Buildings offer plenty of possibilities, including gaps behind siding, spaces around window frames and protected areas beneath rooflines.
Sun-facing walls absorb warmth during the day, making them attractive gathering places. According to University of Minnesota Extension, boxelder bugs are especially drawn to buildings with southern or western exposure.
Asian lady beetles also seek shelter in buildings during fall. University of Missouri Extension identifies October and November as the period when adults look for protected winter sites.
That makes this a timely concern for Jefferson City homeowners. A cool night followed by a sunny afternoon can make insects on the warmer side of a house especially noticeable. Activity varies between properties, so identifying what you are seeing is the first step.
Which insects commonly gather on homes?
Several insects can appear around siding, windows and doors in fall. Two common examples are boxelder bugs and multicolored Asian lady beetles.
Boxelder bugs
Adult boxelder bugs are mostly black with red or orange-red lines along their bodies and wings. They may gather in groups on siding, brick, window frames and other warm surfaces.
Boxelder bugs are generally nuisance pests rather than insects that damage a home’s structure. The main concern is their ability to enter through small openings and become an annoyance indoors. Crushing them can also leave stains or an unpleasant odor.
Multicolored Asian lady beetles
Asian lady beetles resemble the familiar ladybugs many homeowners recognize. Their color and number of spots can vary, so those features alone do not reliably identify them.
In fall, they may collect on sunny walls and work their way into gaps around windows, doors, siding and rooflines. Once inside, they can appear near windows when conditions warm up.
Avoid crushing them against walls, curtains or furniture. When disturbed, they can release a yellowish defensive fluid that smells unpleasant and may stain surfaces.
Other insects around windows and siding
Stink bugs, flies and wasps can also show up around a home’s exterior. Their behavior and the appropriate response differ.
For example, repeated wasp activity at one opening deserves a different approach from boxelder bugs resting on a sunny wall. If you are unsure what you are seeing, a clear photograph can help with identification.
Where to check for entry points
Start with the area where insects are gathering. From ground level, look around nearby windows, doors and other accessible openings.
Common maintenance issues include:
- Torn or poorly fitting window screens.
- Worn weatherstripping around doors.
- Gaps beneath exterior doors.
- Cracked sealant around window and door frames.
- Unsealed gaps around utility pipes or cables.
Notice whether the insects are spread across the wall or concentrated around one particular opening. If you are also finding them inside, note which room or window is affected.
An exterior photograph showing the surrounding area can be useful alongside a close-up of the insect. There is no need to climb a ladder or remove siding to gather this information.
Seal gaps without blocking ventilation or drainage
Repairing damaged screens and replacing worn weatherstripping can help reduce entry. Suitable exterior sealant may also be appropriate for unintended gaps around frames and utility penetrations.
However, some openings are supposed to remain open.
Masonry weep holes, drainage paths, soffit vents, dryer outlets and other ventilation features serve necessary functions. Blocking them can interfere with airflow or trap moisture.
If you are unsure whether an opening should be sealed, have it checked before making a repair. Roofing, electrical, masonry and ventilation concerns may need the appropriate contractor.
Orange Mango can help assess pest activity around accessible areas and explain where maintenance may be useful. Structural repairs and pest treatment are separate parts of addressing an entry problem.
What to do if bugs are already indoors
For occasional boxelder bugs or Asian lady beetles, a vacuum is often a practical first step. Remove visible insects without crushing them against walls or fabrics, then empty the vacuum promptly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pay attention to where they keep appearing. Repeated activity near the same window or in the same room can help narrow down where a closer inspection is needed, although the visible location does not always reveal the exact entry point.
Repeatedly spraying around a window may not resolve the underlying problem. For these fall visitors, identifying the insect, removing those you can reach and addressing appropriate entry points are useful starting steps.
If you find a nest, encounter stinging insects or notice activity in an area you cannot safely access, leave that area undisturbed and ask for help.
When professional pest control can help
You can ask for help while insects are still gathering outside. Large clusters, recurring seasonal problems or uncertainty about an entry point are all reasonable reasons to discuss prevention.
University Extension guidance emphasizes preventing entry before these insects settle into sheltered spaces. Depending on the pest and conditions, targeted exterior treatment may be appropriate alongside maintenance recommendations.
Orange Mango’s general pest-control service begins with inspecting accessible areas and identifying the reported activity.
Our TriBand Protection System focuses on three areas around the home:
- The foundation and base of the structure.
- Windows, doors and other entry areas.
- Accessible eaves and soffits.
Recommendations depend on the pest, where activity is occurring and what can be accessed. Interior household-pest service is available when needed, with the approach explained for your particular concern.
