Mosquito identification and yard prevention

Activity around shaded vegetation and standing water can point to places worth checking.

What to look for

Adult mosquitoes have slender bodies, long legs, narrow wings and a long mouthpart extending from the head. Other small flies can look similar. This reference photo does not identify every mosquito species or tell you whether an insect carries disease.

Where should you look for standing water?

Start with small containers around the outdoor spaces you use. Buckets, plant saucers, toys and folds in covers can hold mosquito breeding water. The presence of a nearby lake alone does not identify the source at your home.

Recognizing mosquito activity around the yard

Mosquitoes are most noticeable around shady vegetation, patios, decks and areas that hold water after rain. Biting pressure around dawn, dusk or after a storm can help narrow down where conditions are favorable. Many mosquito species develop in small amounts of still water, not just ponds or ditches.

Water and mosquito habitat

Clogged gutters, birdbaths, plant saucers, tarps, toys and low spots in the yard can all hold enough water to matter. Dense vegetation gives adult mosquitoes a shaded place to rest during the day. Rainy Mid-Missouri stretches can make these patterns more noticeable.

Reduce water-holding places at home

Empty containers that collect rainwater, refresh birdbath water regularly, keep gutters flowing and trim back vegetation around the places your family uses most. For health questions or illness concerns, contact a medical professional or local public-health authority.

When to discuss seasonal mosquito service

Contact Orange Mango when you want a seasonal outdoor plan for a property that remains uncomfortable despite source reduction. Tell us where activity is strongest so the visit can focus on the right areas.

Mosquitoes: common questions

Why are mosquitoes worse after rain?

Rain can create or refresh small water-holding areas and increases humidity that helps mosquitoes stay active.

Will treating my yard remove every mosquito?

No outdoor program can remove every mosquito, but source reduction and targeted service can reduce pressure in usable areas.
